Kinshasa, July 5 /Xinhua/ — In the Democratic Republic of Congo /DRC/, 1,528 confirmed cases of Ebola fever have been reported, including 492 deaths, amid the ongoing spread of a new outbreak of the disease in the country.
According to the situation report published on Saturday by the public health authorities of the DRC, a total of 239 patients have recovered, 628 confirmed patients are currently in isolation or hospitalized. The authorities have also identified 185 suspected cases.
The report states that the weekly number of confirmed cases continues to rise. In the 25th and 26th epidemiological weeks, the highest figures to date were recorded — in each of these weeks, the number of cases exceeded 300, indicating ongoing community-level transmission of the infection.
The report lists several key issues, including the local population’s resistance to taking post-mortem swabs, insufficient capabilities of Ebola treatment centers, especially in the eastern province of North Kivu, ineffective contact tracing, delays in laboratory test results, shortages of medical supplies and infection prevention materials, as well as unsafe conditions and limited access in some affected areas.
The World Health Organization reported on Thursday that patient recruitment has begun in the DRC for a clinical trial aimed at evaluating potential treatments for Bundibugyo strain Ebola fever. Currently, there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment. –0–
