Strikes on Ukraine
The number of dead and wounded among the civilian population of Ukraine continues to rise. This was stated by the UN’s chief human rights official Volker Türk, presenting his report to the UN Human Rights Council on Friday. “Today is a day of mourning in Kyiv. As a result of a horrific attack by Russian armed forces on Thursday night, at least 30 civilians were killed, and no fewer than 99 were injured,” the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights recalled. War in Sudan
The war in Sudan may enter an even more dangerous phase: the strategically important city of El-Obeid is subjected to “relentless” strikes, warned UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk. Speaking at an emergency session of the UN Human Rights Council, Türk urged world leaders to take urgent measures to end the hostilities. Mona Rishwamy, a member of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Sudan, noted that social media is spreading messages and video recordings indicating the build-up of the Rapid Support Forces’ military presence and preparations to enter the city.
El Niño phenomenon
In the coming months, the likelihood of new waves of extreme heat and other hazardous weather events will increase in many regions of the world due to the strengthening of the El Niño phenomenon. This was reported on Friday by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The natural phenomenon El Niño is characterized by an increase in ocean surface temperature in the central and eastern equatorial parts of the Pacific Ocean. The WMO called on governments to take this warning into account when preparing for possible extreme weather conditions, in order to protect people and their livelihoods.
Lake Chad Basin
Deputy Director of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Bureau for West and Central Africa, Andrew Wyllie, stated that UNHCR is concerned about the deteriorating situation in the countries of the Lake Chad basin. He noted that the security situation has been worsening since 2024, and since January of this year, the negative trend has intensified. According to him, the increase in attacks by armed groups on civilians, as well as crime and climate shocks, forces people to leave their homes. The region has about 3.5 million internally displaced persons, of whom approximately 323 thousand are refugees.
