UN, July 3 /Xinhua/ — China supports the countries of the Persian Gulf in achieving genuine strategic autonomy and resolving disagreements through dialogue. This was stated on Thursday by Fu Cong, permanent representative of the PRC to the UN.
“The Middle East, including the Persian Gulf region, cannot again become an arena for great power rivalry or a victim of geopolitical games,” Fu Cong emphasized at the emergency meeting of the UN Security Council convened after the mutual exchange of strikes between the US and Iran.
China supports the countries of the region in their pursuit of strategic autonomy, upholding the concept of common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security, resolving disagreements through dialogue and consultations, and developing a new regional security architecture, Fu Cong stated.
He called for a comprehensive ceasefire and urged Washington and Tehran to faithfully implement the memorandum of understanding, maintain the momentum of negotiations, and work towards reaching a comprehensive agreement acceptable to the stakeholders, regional countries, and the international community.
The Chinese diplomat also called for the prompt restoration of normal navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, noting that free and secure passage is crucial for the stability of global production and supply chains.
He also called for respect for the sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity of the countries in the region, the protection of civilian populations and non-military sites, and welcomed subsequent consultations between the United States and Iran aimed at advancing future negotiations.
According to Fu Cong, China is ready to cooperate with the international community and play a constructive role in promoting the political settlement of regional issues and maintaining peace and stability in the Middle East.
