Beijing, July 2 /Xinhua/ — Zhu Fenglian, official spokesman of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council of the PRC, on Thursday called on the administration of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of Taiwan to abandon the party’s program advocating “Taiwan independence” and to recognize the 1992 Consensus, if it truly believes that no issues related to “Taiwan independence” exist in the current cross-strait relations.
Zhu Fenglian made this statement at a regular departmental press conference in response to recent remarks by an official from Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council.
“If the DPP truly believes that the issue of ‘Taiwan independence’ does not exist, then it must immediately abandon the party’s program aimed at ‘Taiwan independence,’ cease separatist activities, acknowledge the 1992 Consensus embodying the one-China principle, and take concrete actions to improve cross-strait relations,” she said.
Zhu Fenglian stated that the DPP program, advocating for the “independence of Taiwan,” demonstrates its attempt to separate Taiwan from China.
She noted that since coming to power, the DPP administration has actively sought support from external forces to implement separatist plans, which seriously undermines relations between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, threatens peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and harms the security and well-being of Taiwan’s residents.
“The future of Taiwan, as well as the safety, interests, and well-being of Taiwanese compatriots, has always been inseparable from the peaceful development of cross-strait relations and the reunification of the Motherland,” she said.
Zhu Fenglian added that mainland China is ready to strengthen exchanges and contacts with political parties, organizations, and representatives of various circles of Taiwan on the common political basis characterized by adherence to the 1992 Consensus and opposition to “Taiwan independence.”
