Mexico City, July 2 /Xinhua/ — Mexico City and Washington still differ on several trade issues amid the upcoming July joint review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement /USMCA/. This was stated on Wednesday by Mexico’s Minister of Economy Marcelo Ebrard at a press conference following an online meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Jaymeison Greer and Canada’s minister responsible for trade with the U.S., Dominic Leblanc.
During the negotiations, J. Greer confirmed that Washington currently does not want to automatically extend the USMCA for another 16 years. The three countries are working to revise the free trade agreement for the years 2020-36 before it is extended.
M. Ebrard noted that Mexico opposes American tariff measures on its steel, aluminum, and automotive products, as well as the introduction of seasonal import schemes for agricultural products.
He emphasized that one of the key issues during the negotiations will be the updating of the rules for determining the country of origin of goods and the mechanisms for verifying their compliance, especially considering the new provisions that the US administration wants to include in the agreement.
In addition, the review process of the USMCA will include a new topic related to economic security, the minister said. This concerns access to strategic mineral resources and the protection of supply chains amid increasing economic and geopolitical tensions in the world, he explained.
As M. Ebrard noted, a trade meeting between the USA and Canada is scheduled for July 20. –0–
