Tbilisi, July 1 /Xinhua/ — The Government of Georgia plans to invest about 7 billion US dollars in the development of the transport and logistics sector by 2032 and will continue to finance this area further. This was stated by the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Mariam Kvrivishvili, speaking on Wednesday at the Georgian-Uzbek business forum.
According to the minister, modernization and construction of roads and highways are planned, the implementation of the strategic project of the deep-water port of Anaklia, the construction of a new international airport in Tbilisi, and the modernization of railway infrastructure.
“We continue to make large-scale investments not only to increase cargo turnover but also to change the positioning of our country, so that Georgia is not only a transit and logistics hub but also a state capable of accumulating cargo, producing products, and remaining a reliable partner connecting East and West,” said M. Kvrivishvili.
She emphasized that the transport and logistics sector is demonstrating high growth rates, and cooperation with Central Asian countries contributes to one of the most dynamic growth indicators in freight turnover.
Speaking about the development of the Middle Corridor, M. Kvrivishvili noted the need for further expansion of capabilities for transporting both containerized and bulk cargo.
“We must be prepared for Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan to grow, and for us to develop together with our partners. That is why it is extremely important to invest today in basic infrastructure so that businesses can transport more cargo. This will make the Middle Corridor not only one of the most competitive but also the main and most reliable transport route,” said the Georgian minister.
On Wednesday, a Georgian-Uzbek business forum was held in Tbilisi. The event was organized by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Georgia and the Agency for Foreign Investment Attraction under the Ministry of Investments, Industry and Trade of the Republic of Uzbekistan. About 70 companies from Uzbekistan and around 250 companies from Georgia participated in the business forum, representing the construction industry, logistics, agriculture, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, the textile industry, and other key sectors of the economy.
