Tashkent, July 1 /Xinhua/ — The Board of Executive Directors of the World Bank (WB) has approved a financial support package for Uzbekistan amounting to 105 million U.S. dollars, aimed at implementing a program to reform primary education in the country. This was reported by the bank’s representative office.
The financial package includes a concessional loan of 100 million dollars from the International Development Association and a grant of 5 million dollars from the International Finance Facility for Education.
According to the World Bank, the number of schoolchildren in Uzbekistan exceeds 7.6 million. To meet the growing demand, the country needs to build about 300 new schools annually.
The World Bank Regional Director for Central Asia, Nadji Benhasin, emphasized that developing students’ basic skills is crucial for strengthening human capital and the long-term socio-economic development of Uzbekistan.
As part of the program planned until 2030, it is intended to improve the qualifications of about 50 thousand teachers and school principals, as well as to create 27 thousand additional student places in primary grades. It is expected that the implementation of the project will benefit approximately 2 million students in grades one through four. –0–
