Brussels, July 1 /Xinhua/ — Several people died and several others were injured as a result of a major fire that broke out Wednesday morning in a residential building in the Belgian city of Antwerp. Firefighters continue searching for possible victims inside the building.
According to Belgian media citing the police and fire department, at around 9:53 local time firefighters received a call about a fire in a residential building in the Antwerp district of Linkeroever. About 200 people lived in the burning building.
Local police reported that several people died as a result of the fire, and several others suffered serious injuries or were affected by smoke inhalation. It is not yet known how many people are still inside the building and how many have been evacuated.
The official representative of the Antwerp fire service, Marie De Clerck, reported that firefighters are working on searching for possible victims. According to her, smoke spreads quickly and easily between floors and rooms, making it difficult to search for and evacuate people. M. De Clerck also stated that the fire is not yet extinguished or under control, with several firefighting teams on site, as well as specialists with drones.
The cause of the fire remains unknown. The city police reported that crime scene investigators will arrive at the site today. –0–
