Beijing, April 7 /Xin Hua/ — The priority task is the immediate cessation of military actions and the return to dialogue and negotiations in order to fundamentally resolve existing problems and restore peace and stability in the Persian Gulf region. This was stated on Tuesday, commenting on the situation in Iran, by the official representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Mao Ning.
Several weeks after the start of the conflict, the parties continue exchanging military strikes. The closure of the Hormuz Strait has caused widespread concern, calls for a ceasefire, and demands for ensuring safe navigation are intensifying. In recent days, the USA and Iran have exchanged harsh statements; however, according to sources, the parties may reach an agreement to cease fire.
As Mao Ning indicated at a regular briefing for journalists, the situation in the Middle East continues to worsen, the military conflict is escalating, hitting the global economy and energy security and causing deep concern in the international community.
According to the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC, from the very beginning of the conflict, China has taken an objective, fair, and balanced position and is making efforts to assist in the cessation of fire and the completion of the war.
As Mao Ning recalled, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the PRC, Wang Yi, conducted 26 telephone conversations with parties such as Iran, Israel, Russia, and the countries of the Persian Gulf. The Special Envoy of the PRC Government for the Middle East made a trip to the region with a mediation mission. Last week, China and Pakistan put forward five proposals that reflect the international consensus on ceasefire and establishing peace.
“The use of force does not bring peace. Political settlement is the only true way to peace. The root cause of the Iranian conflict is the armed attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran in violation of international law,” stated the Chinese diplomat.
All parties must demonstrate their sincerity and end this war as soon as possible, a war that originally should not have happened, concluded Mao Ning.
