UN, June 30 /Xinhua/ — On Monday, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution to extend the sanctions regime against the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) for one year — until July 1, 2027.
Sanctions include an embargo on arms supplies to armed groups in the DRC, travel bans, and asset freezes on individuals and entities listed by the Sanctions Committee on the DRC.
Resolution 2825, which received unanimous support from the 15 member countries of the UN Security Council, also extends the mandate of the group of experts assisting the Sanctions Committee on the DRC until August 1, 2027.
The resolution contains a request to the group of experts to submit an interim report to the Security Council no later than December 30, 2026, and a final report no later than June 15, 2027.
It also contains a call to strengthen cooperation between all states and the group of experts and reaffirms the importance of ensuring the security of the group’s members.
The resolution emphasizes the commitment of the UN Secretary-General to make efforts to ensure that those responsible for the killing in March 2017 of two members of the group of experts and four accompanying Congolese citizens are held accountable. –0–
