Nanchang, June 30 /Xinhua/ — Recently, an international scientific seminar on pediatrics was held in the city of Nanchang (administrative center of Jiangxi Province, Eastern China), with a delegation from the Nizhny Novgorod region participating. This gave new impetus to deepening cooperation in the field of medicine and healthcare between the two regions of China and Russia.
The Russian delegation included 10 people. Within the framework of the scientific seminar, pediatricians from China and Russia exchanged views on topics such as the full cycle of treatment for spinal muscular atrophy and immunobiological treatment of severe bronchial asthma.
According to Zhou Qiuqi, a pediatrician from Ji’an County, Jiangxi Province, who participated in the mentioned scientific seminar, Russian specialists shared their clinical experience in treating the relevant rare diseases. According to him, this knowledge is especially valuable for primary care hospitals in China, including his own.
“We sometimes encounter children suspected of having similar symptoms. Relying on international clinical experience makes it easier to choose the best time for intervention,” he said.
Recall that an agreement on cooperation was signed between Jiangxi Province and the Nizhny Novgorod Region in 2023. In 2024, the Women’s and Children’s Medical Center of Jiangxi Province and the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital (NODKB) established cooperation within the framework of friendly relations between the two regions, and in 2025, a cooperation agreement was signed between the two medical institutions.
In June 2025, a remote medical consultation was held with the participation of doctors from the Women’s and Children’s Medical Center of Jiangxi Province and the National Children’s Orthopedics and Traumatology Hospital to develop treatment methods for a Chinese girl named Xinxin, suffering from systemic scleroderma.
Head of the allergology department at the State Healthcare Institution of the Nizhny Novgorod Region “NODKB” Elena Vladimirovna Timofeeva, who participated in the current scientific seminar as part of the Russian delegation, still remembers Xinxin well. She recalled that at that time the Russian hospital team was studying the clinical course of the girl’s illness together, and she herself gave “only a small part of the advice.”
Upon learning that the girl’s condition had significantly improved and that she could attend school and live a normal life, E. Timofeeva, a doctor for 38 years, said that the greatest happiness for a doctor is to have the opportunity to help children from distant places.
Over the past two years, the cooperation mechanism in pediatrics between Jiangxi Province and Nizhny Novgorod Oblast has been continuously improved. In total, more than 10 online seminars on medical specialties have been held between the two sides, covering immunology, neurology, neonatal surgery, respiratory medicine, and other disciplines. A comprehensive set of mechanisms has been established, such as regular high-level coordination, routine specialty exchanges, as well as “green” channels for conducting remote consultations.
Starting from September 2026, both parties will hold one remote interdisciplinary consultation per month, taking turns to present complex disease cases and provide advisory conclusions.
According to Svetlana Cheslavovna Belozerova, director of NODKB, despite the fact that the Nizhny Novgorod region and Jiangxi province are far from each other and their medical systems differ, the goal of Russian and Chinese doctors is the same – to protect children’s health.
She said that colleagues from Jiangxi Province have accumulated rich clinical experience, while the Russian side has many years of experience in the field of rare diseases, pediatric immunodeficiency, and others. The advantages of both sides complement each other, which will undoubtedly allow achieving even greater results in cooperation.
