Xi’an, June 30 /Xinhua/ — On Tuesday morning, the high-speed train “Fuxing” departed from Xi’an East Station, marking the launch of the Xi’an–Shiyan high-speed railway, a new major transportation corridor connecting the central and western regions of China.
The design speed of the railway is up to 350 km/h, with a total length of 257 km. It connects the city of Xi’an, the administrative center of Shaanxi Province in northwest China, with the city of Shiyan in the neighboring Hubei Province in the central part of the country.
This line connects to the existing Wuhan–Shiyan high-speed railway, reducing travel time between Xi’an and Wuhan—the administrative center of Hubei Province—to 2 hours and 41 minutes compared to the previous route of 4.5 hours. The travel time between Xi’an and Shiyan has been cut from over 6 hours on regular trains to barely one hour.
Mao Lei, the chief designer of the project, described this railway as a railroad passing through a “natural geological museum,” since the proportion of bridges and tunnels on the line exceeds 90 percent.
Experts believe that the high-speed railway line Xi’an – Shiyan will strengthen economic ties between the western, central, and eastern regions of China, as well as give new impetus to the development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
