Beijing, June 29 /Xinhua/ — China will improve the relevant standards and norms for the protection and use of traditional villages and buildings, the Ministry of Housing, Urban and Rural Development of the PRC announced.
The Deputy Minister of Housing, Urban and Rural Construction of the PRC, Qin Haiyan, stated that it is necessary to develop more detailed technical standards for protection, restoration, repair, renewal, and revitalization in order to avoid one-sided or excessively simplified approaches and to provide more powerful technical support for higher-quality work in the protection and use of traditional villages and traditional buildings.
Zin Haisin made such a statement at a meeting dedicated to the creation of a branch in Beijing for the protection of traditional villages and buildings at the Society of Urban Planning of China.
As of now, China has included 8,155 villages in the list of protection for traditional villages at the national level, while more than 5,000 villages have been included in protection lists at the provincial level.
From 2026 to 2028, funds from the central government will be allocated to support administrative units at the county level, which have good basic conditions, strong initiative, and distinctive features, in the construction of thematic protected zones for traditional villages with the aim of creating a number of state-level cultural brands.
Qin Haixian called on local authorities to systematically analyze the concepts and methods of planning and construction embodied in traditional villages and buildings, to summarize practical experience in protection, repair, and use, and to inherit and develop the wisdom of traditional Chinese culture.
