Saint Petersburg, June 28 /Xin Hua/ — In Saint Petersburg, on the night from Saturday to Sunday, the annual celebration of graduates of the “Scarlet Sails” school took place, in which 65 thousand people from 36 regions of Russia and foreign countries participated.
The celebration opened on Saturday at 8:00 PM local time on Palace Square with performances by youth creative groups. At 10:00 PM, the official opening ceremony took place with the participation of representatives of the city administration. The Governor of Saint Petersburg, Alexander Beglov, congratulated the graduates on their entry into adult life.
The theme of this year is Russian fairy tales: each mise-en-scène of the show was built as an independent mini-performance, leading the audience from the awareness of inner freedom and the joy of youth to the clash of light and darkness. Many popular artists performed on the Palace Square.
At 00:40 on Sunday, a water and pyrotechnic show unfolded on the Neva: amid volleys of fireworks and the delighted shouts of graduates filling the embankments, the pristine white brig “Russia” with scarlet sails sailed along the river.
A. Beglov, wrapping up the results of the celebration, wrote on his channel on MAX that “Scarlet Sails” is a calling card not only of Saint Petersburg but of the entire country. Thanks to live television and internet broadcasts, it is watched annually by tens of millions of people.
“Scarlet Sails” is a school graduation celebration, whose emergence in the late 1960s was inspired by the popularity of the film of the same name based on the story by Alexander Grin. The holiday was first celebrated on June 27, 1968. The tradition was interrupted in 1979; its second birth took place in June 2005. “Scarlet Sails” is included in the registry of world event tourism.
