Geneva, June 28 /Xinhua/ — Since June 21, more than 1300 excess deaths have been registered in Europe, associated with extremely high air temperature. This was reported on Sunday on the social network X by the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
“Currently, 150 million people live in conditions of extreme heat, hundreds of people have died, schools are closed, and power grids are overloaded,” wrote the head of the WHO.
He warned that “heat stroke is often called a ‘silent killer’, and residential buildings, workplaces, and schools in Europe were not designed for such temperatures during construction.”
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted that Europe is the continent where global warming is occurring most rapidly — twice as fast as the average on the planet. “Under the influence of climate change and global warming, the phenomenon of ‘heatwaves, which used to happen once in a generation,’ is now observed almost annually,” he added. –0–
