Shantou, June 26 /Xinhua/ — From January to May 2026, Shantou received a total of 291,900 Russian tourists, which is 130.18% more compared to the same period last year. This is evidenced by the latest data from the city’s Bureau of Culture and Tourism.
Thus, Russia topped the list of countries in the world by the growth rate of the number of tourists visiting China. Following it in this ranking are Indonesia, Canada, Great Britain, and Australia.
According to departmental data, during the reporting period, the East China megalopolis was visited by a total of 4.3836 million inbound tourists, which is 29.06% more on an annual basis. At the same time, Russia became the second largest source country of visitors to Shanghai after the Republic of Korea, with the number of tourists from Russia during the same period totaling 447.5 thousand people, an increase of 25.67% in annual terms.
In addition, for the first 5 months of this year, countries in Southeast Asia, including Thailand and Malaysia, also ranked among the main source countries of visitors to the Chinese metropolis. In particular, during this period, the tourist flows from Thailand and Malaysia to Shanghai amounted to 243.7 thousand and 222.1 thousand person-visits respectively, which is 7.21 percent and 34.01 percent more compared to the same period in 2025. -0-
