Beijing, June 25 /Xinhua/ – The Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the PRC published on Thursday a report on an underwater blue hole on Huanjandao Island in the South China Sea. The document states that the rare blue hole, formed as a result of coral reef growth, is the first of its kind discovered in China.
The area of the cave opening is about 1,491.7 square meters, with its maximum diameter reaching 56.3 meters, and the depth of the cave itself is 16.6 meters. The internal structure of the cave has the shape of a funnel, with a narrow bottom, and stratification by turbidity is observed in the water.
Preliminary geological studies show that this blue hole was formed at least 3200 years ago.
The report also notes that the Blue Hole and the surrounding waters are rich in biological diversity.
