Beijing, June 25 /Xin Hua/ — From June 25 to 27, 2026, at the stage of the National Center for Performing Arts (NCPA), as part of the International Theater Festival of the NCPA, there will be performances of the play “Three Sisters” by Anton Chekhov in the production of Lev Dodin.
This is the first visit of the Saint Petersburg Maly Drama Theater – the Theater of Europe in Beijing and the first return of Lev Dodin to China after a nine-year break – in 2017 the troupe under his leadership performed the play “Brothers and Sisters” in Tianjin.
“Three Sisters” is the fifth production by L. Dodin based on the drama by A. P. Chekhov. “Three Sisters is one of the most interesting, yet also the most complex plays. We decided to approach it only after gaining experience working on productions of Chekhov’s works,” said the director at the press conference.
According to L. Dodin, the choice of “Three Sisters” for the Beijing tour is not accidental. “We are performing in Beijing for the first time, and we thought that this is one of our favorite plays. In this powerful and great theatrical city, it is more appropriate and interesting to start with Three Sisters – as one of the deepest works of the playwright,” noted the director.
Speaking about the Chinese audience, L. Dodin expressed confidence that A. P. Chekhov’s dramaturgy will find a response among Chinese viewers. “I know that in China they love Chekhov, many know him, read and reflect on him. I think the Beijing audience will be interested to see how A. P. Chekhov is understood by his compatriots – Russian actors and directors. Therefore, I expect great responsiveness from the audience, engagement in this story, an internal participation in what we will be telling,” shared L. Dodin.
The director also emphasized the importance of theatrical exchanges between Russia and China. “A considerable number of Russian theaters come to China, and Chinese artists are increasingly present in the Russian theatrical field. This is wonderful and very important because through this we better understand each other not only in theater but also in life. The theatrical language is absolutely universal, it tells about people and unites us,” he said.
