Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering pays special attention to the integration of theoretical education with practical training of future engineers. One of the vivid examples of such an approach is a successful internship of a student from the Department of Transport Systems and Road and Bridge Construction (TSiDMS) in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic.
A fifth-year student of the specialty “Construction of unique buildings and structures” (specialization “Bridges”)Egor Averinunder the guidance of the senior lecturer of the Department of Control Systems and Digital Modeling of SystemsDmitry Yaroshutinhad the opportunity to apply the acquired knowledge in practice by participating in the inspection of bridge structures in difficult mountainous conditions.
The internship, organized jointly with LLC “CKM”, allowed the future engineer to complete a set of tasks corresponding to the modern requirements of the industry: measurements of the main structural elements and geodetic survey of the roadway, instrumental measurements to determine the strength of the span structure elements and subsequent assessment of load capacity, creation of a three-dimensional digital model of the bridge structure using ground laser scanning technology.
Practical work provided an opportunity not only to consolidate theoretical knowledge but also to understand the interrelation of constructive solutions with the features of terrain, climate, and operation of structures in mountainous areas.
Yegor Averin noted the high significance of the training received at the TSIDMS department: “In two years of studying at the department, I gained a fundamental base, without which it would be difficult to accomplish the assigned tasks. It is especially valuable that the internship coincided with the completion of the course ‘Inspection and Testing of Bridge Structures.’ This allowed me to immediately apply the acquired knowledge in real conditions and significantly increased my professional confidence.”
According to him, during the internship the student also developed skills to work in non-standard conditions, gained experience in interacting with a multinational community, and assessed the influence of sociocultural factors on engineering activities — important competencies for a modern specialist.
