On June 16, 2026, at the forum “Three Missions of Russian Education” presentednew release of the rating of the best universities in the country RAEX-100. The ranking is part of the “Three Missions of the University” family. In 2026, universities from 30 regions were included in the list of leaders.
The 15th annual rating release showed the stability of the positions of the leaders of the Russian higher education sector. The winner was again Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, in second place was Bauman Moscow State Technical University, in third — the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, followed by Saint Petersburg State University and the National Research University Higher School of Economics. NSU ranked 16th in the rating for the second year in a row. Besides Novosibirsk State University, in the top 16 universities located in the regions, Tomsk Polytechnic University and Ural Federal University also made the list.
The RAEX-100 ranking of the best universities in Russia has been published annually since 2012. When evaluating the quality of education at universities (weight 50%), groups of indicators such as “level of teaching”, “international integration”, “resource provision”, and “demand among applicants” were considered. To assess the demand for university graduates by employers (weight 30%), groups of indicators like “cooperation with employers” and “quality of graduates’ careers” were analyzed.The level of scientific research activity at the university (weighing 20%) was determined from one of the groups of indicators “research potential,” “scientific achievements,” and “research infrastructure.” A total of 45 indicators are used in the rating.
NGU in “quality of education” has been improving its position over the past three years and is now in the top 10 best universities in Russia. Moreover, according to this criterion, NGU is the only university located in the regions that made it into the top ten best. In terms of “employer demand,” the university ranks 24th (advancing by 1 position compared to last year). In terms of scientific research activity, NGU ranks 15th.
In recent years, Novosibirsk State University has seen a growing interest in the STEMM fields — natural sciences, technologies, engineering specialties, medicine, and mathematics. The number of applications from prospective students is increasing, as well as the passing score for budget-funded places by one point. New specialties with an applied focus related to the use of AI technologies are emerging at NSU. For example, last year the university became the winner of a federal competition for training top specialists in the AI field and launched a new undergraduate program called “Applied Artificial Intelligence”.The first group consisted of more than 175 people from various regions of Russia.
“The interest has noticeably shifted towards technical specialties related to design, applied information technologies, artificial intelligence,” says Okunev. “So far, AI automation has not fully reached engineering and technical fields, where the cost of an engineer’s mistake is high and it is important to consider many formalized parameters. In the coming years, a confident demand for technical specialists who can design and operate real-world devices should be expected,” he noted.Aleksey Okunev, director of the Institute of Intellectual Robotics of the NRU.
