Islamabad, June 18 /Xinhua/ — A memorandum of understanding between the USA and Iran was signed electronically by the leaders of both countries and came into effect immediately. This was reported by Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Thursday morning.
Sh. Sharif wrote on the social network X that the memorandum was signed by the presidents of the United States and Iran and approved by them as an intermediary.
The Islamabad memorandum on mutual understanding stipulates that Iran will immediately open the Hormuz Strait, while the United States will lift the naval blockade as the first step after the agreement is implemented, added Sh. Sharif.
“The signing of this document at the highest level of governments demonstrates the commitment of both sides to the diplomatic resolution of the conflict,” he said.
Pakistan, with the support of Qatar, will hold an official ceremony in Switzerland on Friday to mark the agreement and start negotiations at the technical level between the two parties, added Sh. Sharif.
He also noted the constructive participation of the Qatari leadership and highly appreciated the contribution of Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Egypt in facilitating the conclusion of the document.
The Prime Minister of Pakistan expressed hope that the memorandum will serve as a “solid foundation for greater mutual understanding, mutual respect, and common prosperity for the entire region.”
