Beijing, June 17 /Xinhua/ — At the Beijing International Book Fair (BIBF), one of the largest book forums in Asia, the debut of the Moscow city stand took place on Wednesday. The exposition of the Russian capital was deployed as part of the 32nd edition of the fair, which runs from June 17 to 21 at the China National Convention Center in Beijing.
The stand features nine Moscow publishing houses that publish both comics and fiction. The exhibition includes more than 300 books, and over 300 negotiations with Chinese colleagues are planned in total.
Special attention at the Moscow stand is given to illustrated classics and children’s books, educational literature, and editions with high adaptation potential that are already in demand among Chinese publishers. The General Director of the Moscow Creative Industries Agency, Gulnara Agamova, emphasized that the success of such projects is directly due to the combination of market trends, high-quality illustrations, and professionally localized translation.
Russia and China are connected by a long history of cultural and humanitarian exchanges. G. Agamova is convinced that the development of humanitarian relations is the correct and important direction, and the book plays one of the key roles in this process, since a scenario adapted from a literary work can be used in cinema, animation, video games, and theater.
“We see a great prospect for cooperation between Moscow and China precisely in this direction and are focusing on it,” said the head of the agency.
According to her, interest in Chinese literature in Russia is steadily growing. The real breakthrough was the science fiction “The Three-Body Problem” by Liu Cixin. In addition, Russian readers appreciate serious contemporary prose – from Nobel laureate Mo Yan to Yu Hua and Liu Zhenyun. And among young audiences in recent years, Chinese fantasy has become a true bestseller.
“This means that the request covers a wide variety of Chinese books – from major prose to genre and children’s literature. And here our publishers have a huge field for joint work,” she said at the event.
The director of the Beijing International Book Fair office and representative of the fair organizer, Se Xiaoche, at the ceremony of opening the Moscow stand, noted that in recent years, Russian-Chinese publishing ties continue to deepen: more and more books through translation are becoming accessible to readers in both countries. He also noted that Chinese publishers plan to visit the Moscow International Book Fair in September this year for mutual exchange and interaction.
“We hope that book fairs will become a connecting link that will help establish more contacts and expand our cooperation,” he emphasized.
