UN, June 15 /Xinhua/ — UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on Israel and the group “Hezbollah” to cease hostilities, his official spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said on Monday.
“The message was intended to stop hostilities,” noted S. Dujarric, responding to a question about A. Guterres’s position in connection with contradictory statements regarding Lebanon in the context of the US-Iran agreement.
According to him, a sustainable resolution is possible under two conditions: “Hezbollah” must provide the Lebanese government with full control over the armed forces and the entire territory of the country, and Israel — respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Lebanon.
“We want the hostilities to cease, so that hundreds of thousands of Lebanese who wish to return home can have that opportunity and begin the restoration. Those who are currently in Israel will also be able to return home to the north,” he added.
S. Dujarric noted that the UN has not yet seen the text of the agreement.
The Secretary-General adheres to the opinion that the United States, Iran, as well as other countries of the Persian Gulf must do everything possible to ensure lasting peace, his representative summarized. –0–
