Last year, on Chansin Island in the Chunmin area of Shanghai, approximately every 7.5 days a high-tech vessel was launched into the water. On the island are shipbuilding enterprises such as Jiangnan Shipyard and Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, which belong to the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), and their orders are already booked through 2030.
Currently, the overall construction cycle of a single tanker for transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) on the island has been reduced from more than 30 months to 16-18 months, which corresponds to the leading international level. And the driving force behind these successes is innovations.
Thanks to consecutive technological breakthroughs, the localization level of the aforementioned two companies on the island has increased from less than 30% over ten years ago to approximately 80% at present.
Since 2020, the volume of production in the field of shipbuilding and marine technology on Chansin Island has been rapidly growing, and in 2025 it exceeded 90 billion yuan.
In June of last year, Shanghai unveiled a plan to implement a project for the construction of a world-class modern shipbuilding base on Changsang Island, aiming to achieve an industrial production volume exceeding 120 billion yuan by 2027 and presented a clear “roadmap.”
The representative of the Administrative Committee for the Development and Construction of Chansi Island stated that Chansi intends to make every effort to create a modern shipbuilding base of world level on Chansi Island, to well develop maritime affairs and to increase the state’s potential.
