UN, June 14 /Xinhua/ — UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the announcement that the USA and Iran had agreed on a peace agreement providing for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, as well as a framework for further negotiations. This was reported on Sunday by his official representative Stefan Dujarric.
“This represents an important step toward the peaceful resolution of the conflict,” the statement says.
The UN chief expressed deep gratitude to Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and other countries of the region for their constructive role in supporting the negotiations that led to the peace agreement.
“The Secretary-General hopes that the parties will use this new impulse and double efforts towards the final resolution of the conflict,” the statement says. “The Secretary-General confirms that the United Nations is ready to support the parties in achieving a durable and comprehensive peace,” emphasized S.
