The Second World Conference on Classical Studies has opened in Greece. Participants discuss how classical heritage relates to modernity. CGTN correspondent interviewed Liu Xiaofen – a leading Chinese specialist in classical studies, considered a key figure in the revival of this field in China. Liu Xiaofen has been engaged in classics for decades and seeks to build a system that unites Chinese and Western traditions. In response to a question about how different civilizations can achieve harmony, the professor reminds of an important universal human principle.

The Greeks believed that the various cities and peoples of humanity should compare beauty: who is more beautiful and virtuous. We accepted this concept. It is not only about harmony in diversity and the ability to share beauty, but also about who is more virtuous, who possesses higher moral qualities. Specifically speaking, the study of classical works gives our next generations a broad and far-reaching perspective on things from an early age.”
