New York, June 10 /Xin Hua/ — The consumer price index (CPI) in the USA increased by 4.2% year-on-year in May, reaching the highest level since May 2023, against the background of persistently high energy prices. This is evidenced by data published on Wednesday by the American Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Notably, the energy price index for May increased by 3.9 percent compared to the previous month, providing over 60 percent of the total inflation growth.
Prices for gasoline and fuel oil in May rose by 40.5% and 58.9%, respectively, in annual terms.
According to the American Automobile Association, on May 20, the average gasoline price across the country reached $4.555 per gallon, rising by 50 percent since the start of the conflict between the United States and Iran in February. As of June 10, the price dropped to $4.151 per gallon. –0–
