Evgeny Miletin with students of SPBGASU

Students and teachers of the architecture faculty of SPbGASU became acquainted with the activities of the Russian State Historical Archive (RGIA). The tour of this largest archive in Europe, located in Petersburg, was conducted by the deputy director of RGIA.Evgeny Miletin.

During the course of two hours, students familiarized themselves with the work of one of the country’s most important historical archives. They saw that the archive is not only a place for storing documents, but also a complex system that ensures the preservation of historical heritage, where professionals of the highest level work.

Participants were shown various archival units and told about the principle of organizing and storing the funds. Students learned how the safety of documents, books, drawings, and other historical materials is ensured. Special attention was given to the processes of restoring archival documents, as well as digitization and the creation of microfilms.

For future architects, familiarization with the work of archives has special significance: archival materials are an important source of information when studying the history of architecture, urban planning, and cultural heritage sites. Authentic drawings, project documentation, building descriptions, and historical evidence allow researchers to better understand the processes of forming the urban environment and the architectural appearance of buildings from various eras. Visiting RGIA allowed students to see how the documentary memory of the country is preserved and what role primary sources play in educational and scientific activities.

The Architectural Faculty of SPbGASU thanks the Russian State Historical Archive and personally Evgeny Miletin for the informative tour and attentive attitude towards our students.
