The United Nations Organization representation in the Philippines expresses its deepest condolences to the residents of Mindanao and other affected areas by the earthquake on June 8. Reports of large-scale destruction are coming in: residential houses and infrastructure have been damaged.

According to SMI, on Monday morning an underwater earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 occurred off the southern coast of the Philippines, which, in turn, caused a tsunami about a meter high. At least four people died, more than 200 were injured.

“Together with the government and partners, we are assessing the consequences of the earthquake and are ready to provide support in conducting operations to eliminate the consequences and restore,” says the statement from the UN team in the Philippines.

The UN also noted the selflessness of emergency response workers, medical personnel, and volunteers who “work tirelessly, saving lives and providing assistance.”

“In moments of crisis, unity and compassion are our greatest strengths,” the statement says.
