On June 6, Russia and many countries around the world celebrate Russian Language Day and the 227th anniversary of the birth of the great Russian poet, the founder of the modern literary language Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin. The Ministry of Education and Science conducts systematic work to support and promote the Russian language, as well as to improve the accessibility and quality of Russian education abroad.
“Congratulations to everyone on the Day of the Russian Language! As precisely stated in the decree of President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, the Russian language is one of the foundations of Russian statehood and is inextricably linked with traditional Russian spiritual and moral values. Its popularization in Russia is facilitated by a number of measures within the national project “Youth and Children,” including olympiads and youth forums. Abroad, open education centers operate in 70 countries, events of the Association of Russian Schools are held in 95 states, and it is also possible to study the language at university branches.””All this allows to strengthen ties with different peoples and share our cultural wealth,” said Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko.
Minister of Education Sergey Kravtsov outlined the main directions and results of work on the preservation and promotion of the Russian language, as well as on improving the accessibility and quality of Russian education abroad.
“The Russian language is an instrument of cultural rapprochement and spiritual unity, including beyond the borders of Russia. It remains an inseparable link between the past, present, and future, an instrument of mutual understanding. International projects of the Ministry of Education of Russia play a key role in popularizing the language and culture, in particular the project ‘Russian Teacher Abroad,’ which is becoming increasingly popular. In 2026, more than 600 teachers will be sent to 33 countries. The implementation of the project promotes growing interest in the Russian language, Russia, and Russian education,” noted Sergey Kravtsov.
Participants of the project “Russian Teacher Abroad,” implemented by the Center for International Cooperation, work in foreign schools and teach subjects in Russian. Requests from schools wishing to join the project continue to be received. In 2026, 23 new educational organizations have already confirmed their readiness to participate in the work in the upcoming year. At the same time, the project’s geography is expanding: currently, partnership relations with African countries are being actively developed.
The Association of Schools of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus also operates successfully. As of today, it unites 950 educational organizations from two countries, educating 720.5 thousand students. In 2026, about 58.3 thousand children participated in the Association’s events.
The Association of Russian Schools Abroad unites more than 700 educational organizations in 95 countries. More than 86 thousand foreign children participated in the association’s events.
Work on conducting Russian language courses and teaching in Russian is carried out at centers of open education abroad. Currently, such centers operate in more than 70 countries. In 2025 alone, more than 21 thousand people underwent training. Educational programs abroad are implemented jointly with pedagogical universities under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education of Russia.
In addition, pedvuzyi conduct scientific research on the promotion of the Russian language and Russian education abroad, which contributes to strengthening partnerships and friendly relations between countries. Within the framework of the research, new teaching methods and manuals, retraining programs, additional education, and advanced training courses, as well as educational internet platforms, are being developed.
Russian is also studied in more than 20 thousand schools abroad.
