Beijing, June 6 /Xinhua/ — On Saturday at the Capital Normal University /CNU/ in Beijing, thematic events dedicated to Russian Language Day were held. The events were aimed at paying tribute to the great Russian poet and writer Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin, the Russian language and literary tradition, and serve as an important testimony to Sino-Russian humanitarian exchange, dialogue between civilizations and cooperation in the field of education.
Secretary of the SPU Party Committee Cao Wenjun noted that SPU always attaches great importance to academic cooperation and humanitarian exchanges with Russia. The university supports long-term partnership relations with Saint Petersburg State University (SPbU), Moscow State Linguistic University (MSLU), and other Russian universities, developing Confucius Institutes in Russia, joint scientific projects, and the training of highly qualified specialists.
The university successfully established the second branch of the Pushkin House in the world, as well as founded the Beijing Center for Slavic Studies. In April of the current year, on the joint initiative of SPbU and the A. M. Gorky Institute of World Literature /IMLI/ of the Russian Academy of Sciences /RAS/, the China-Russia Literary Center was also established.The creation of a new center promotes further deepening of scientific research and academic cooperation in the field of Chinese and Russian literature, added Cao Wenjun, confirming the university’s aspiration to create a Chinese-Russian research platform that has an influence at the international level in the field of research of Chinese and Russian literature.
Russian Ambassador to China Igor Morgulov noted that one of the important elements of the cross-year of the formation of relations between Russia and China, which was recently initiated, is the promotion of the study and spread of the Russian language in China and Chinese in Russia. Today, Russian as a major specialty is taught in 182 universities in China, and in about 400 as a second foreign language. On average, the annual number of people studying Russian in China exceeds 85,000, and in total, several hundred thousand people speak Pushkin’s language.
According to him, the popularization of the Russian language in China is also facilitated by joint educational programs and institutes. Currently, there are more than 200 such programs. For example, MSU-PPI / M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University and the Beijing Polytechnic Institute in the city of Shenzhen / Guangdong Province, South China, where about 5,000 people study Russian.
The Russian diplomat expressed hope that the activities of the Years of Education will give an impetus to the growth of mutual interest in learning each other’s languages in Russia and China, especially among the youth, who are to take up the relay of Russian-Chinese friendship.
Before the start of the event, I. Morgulov laid a basket of flowers at the monument to A. S. Pushkin on the territory of SPU, which is the only one of its kind in the Chinese capital. Let us recall that in 2019, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Russia, the State Museum of A. S. Pushkin presented this monument to the Russian poet to SPU. Every year on June 6, a traditional Pushkin festival of poetry and music is held at the monument.
On the same day, the 1st scientific-methodological conference on teaching the Russian language in Beijing secondary schools was also held.
