UN, June 5 /Xinhua/ — Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the UN Sun Lay on Thursday in his speech at the open meeting of the UN Security Council emphasized the necessity of the earliest possible resolution of the chemical weapons issue in Syria, discussed for more than 10 years, to help the country focus on national restoration.
According to him, the Chinese side highly values the commitment of the Syrian government to fulfilling its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and cooperation with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), as well as supports Syria’s efforts to promote inclusive political reconciliation, achieve national reconciliation, and prevent internal division.
In addition, Sun Lei emphasized the importance of fighting terrorism, calling on the Syrian government to fight all groups included by the UN Security Council in the list of terrorist organizations. He also called on the OPCW to strengthen monitoring and help member states prevent dangerous chemical substances and “sensitive” technologies from falling into the hands of terrorists.
