“East-Siberian Oil and Gas Company” (part of the oil production complex “Rosneft”) supported the project to create an ecological trail in the Tunguska State Nature Reserve based on the results of a grant competition. The trail will pass through the Evenki taiga from the village of Vanavara to the expedition base of the scientist Leonid Kulik, the first researcher of the Tunguska meteorite phenomenon.

The trail repeats the route of scientific expeditions of the 1920s. The final point of the route, “Kulikov Borrow Pit,” is a cultural heritage site of regional significance. It still serves as a base for conducting field research.

Today, only scientists and tourists with special permission can travel this route. The path goes through overgrown areas where infrastructure is completely absent. Within the framework of the grant, wooden walkways, signs, information boards, and equipped tent sites will appear on the trail. This will make the route safe for people and nature.

The trail will expand the opportunities for scientists to conduct research on the flora and fauna of the reserve. Along the route, there are encountered red-listed species such as the Angara subpopulation of the wild reindeer, the peregrine falcon, the calypso bulbosa (“northern orchid”), and the truncated horn (a rare edible mushroom). The creation of a recreational zone will reduce the load on the ecosystem and lessen the disturbance factor for animals.

The Kulik Base will be able to be visited not only by scientists, but also by groups of students and schoolchildren accompanied by instructors. Thus, ancient Evenki traditions, graduates of local schools symbolically dream of transitioning from childhood to adulthood by walking the path through the Evenki taiga.
