Beijing, June 3 /Xinhua/ — The official spokesperson of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council of the PRC, Zhu Fenglian, condemned on Wednesday the administration of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of Taiwan for its so-called tariff concessions to the United States, calling it “self-deception” and a “general mockery.”
Zhu Fenglian made such a statement at another departmental press conference, commenting on the recent US statement that starting from May 1, certain tariff concessions for Taiwan have come into effect, which, according to the Taiwanese administration, will help improve the competitiveness of the relevant industries on the island.
Zhu Fenlian denied these statements, accusing the DPP administration of “servility to the USA” to the detriment of the main industries of Taiwan, its development prospects, as well as the interests and well-being of local residents.
She noted that the DPW authorities offered significant concessions, including promised investments amounting to 500 billion US dollars, zero tariffs on 4,885 industrial and 1,482 agricultural goods from the USA, in exchange only for symbolic tariff privileges from the USA.
“The DPP administration, without feeling any shame at all, brazenly claims credit for itself,” said Zhuo Fenlan, adding that such steps will neither deceive Taiwan’s business community nor the local population, but will only lead to backlash, for which the DPP administration itself will pay the price. -0-
