Washington, June 2 /Xinhua/ — A new round of negotiations at the ambassadorial level between Israel and Lebanon is continuing at the US State Department in Washington against the background of ongoing clashes between Israel and Hezbollah.
The meeting lasted all day on Tuesday and is supposed to continue on Wednesday, CNN reported citing an Israeli official.
According to reports, on Tuesday negotiations with the American side were conducted by the US Deputy National Security Advisor Michael Nides and State Department advisor Dan Holloway.
“We are trying to consider the Lebanon-Israel negotiations separately from the Iranian ones, but Iran wants to unify them,” said US Secretary of State Mark Rubio at a Senate hearing earlier on Tuesday.
M. Rubio also accused Iran of “attempting to sabotage any efforts within which Israel and Lebanon could cooperate,” and to drag out the negotiations.
A senior representative of Hezbollah stated on Tuesday that the group will not accept any partial ceasefire with Israel and will refuse the US proposal, in which Hezbollah was required to stop attacks in northern Israel in exchange for Israel not striking the southern suburbs of Beirut. –0–
