Yinchuan, June 2 /Xinhua/ — In the northwest of China, a deep integration of magnificent natural landscapes and objects of rich intangible cultural heritage with modern technologies and fashion trends is currently actively taking place. Thanks to this, a number of new products of immersive and interactive cultural tourism are emerging, attracting travelers from all over the world in search of an original adventurous experience.

The archaeological park “Si Xia Mausoleum”, located in the city of Yinchuan, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region /NHAR, Northwest China/, is the burial site of the emperors of the Tangut kingdom /Xi Xia /1038-1227 AD/, which existed parallel to the Chinese Song dynasty. In 2025, it was included in the list of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites. The Si Xia Mausoleum uses digital technologies to change the way people visit historical sites.

In the Xi Xia Mausoleum Museum, intellectual digital display cases with a 720-degree image projection effect have been installed, bright and clear from any angle, allowing visitors to closely touch the exhibits. Valuable artifacts are placed behind transparent OLED display case screens. In the research and study zone, children with their parents can independently try the technique of printing texts in the Tangut language using movable wooden type and learn more about the history of writing and printing in the Xi Xia kingdom.

After visiting the majestic burial towers and the imperial mausoleum at the foot of Helan Mountain, tourists often regret that they cannot go deep into the underground palace, but new technologies have turned this dream into reality. Gu Zhenchen, a tourist from Taiwan, watched a 4D film “Fantastic Journey to the Underground Palace of the Tangut Kingdom.” “As the plot develops, it creates a full immersion effect with special effects like blowing wind or chair vibrations.”It creates the feeling that you yourself, along with the heroes, enter the underground palace and set off on an adventure,

Even more memorable was a project using VR glasses: by putting on the device, visitors can descend together with a virtual guide into the majestic underground palace of the mausoleum of Xi Shi and get acquainted with the history and artifacts of this ancient kingdom.

A theatrical performance with a full immersion effect in the process, launched during the Spring Festival / Chinese New Year / this year, turned a multi-meter corridor in the park territory into a moving stage. Thanks to the captivating dance performances and digital special effects, visitors seem to be transported to the era of the Tangut kingdom. In the mysterious light of the flames, observing the beautiful dances on the fresco in the watery mist, one can closely see exquisite dances, captured on the Si Sia fresco, as well as play chess, the game of Tou /shooting arrows into a jug/ with non-player characters dressed in costumes of the Tangut kingdom.

A series of interactive products has significantly increased the popularity of the “Mausoleum of Xi Xi” park. “Earlier, it was cold in winter, few tourists came, and the season was considered dead. Now, there is no off-season anymore at the Mausoleum of Xi Xi,” noted Van Chzhibin, head of the park complex.

In 2025, the number of visitors to the mausoleum exceeded 1 million people for the first time, and the turnover amounted to almost 60 million yuan. During the Spring Festival of that year, this tourist flow increased by 10.2 times; during the period of May Day holidays of that year, the number of guests increased by 83.28% compared to the same period in 2025, and the turnover grew by 53.11%.

The northwest of China is no longer a place where you have to endure difficult, exhausting journeys under the scorching sun, having turned into a park of entertainment and a paradise for relaxation. Deep in the Tengger Desert in the city of Zhongwei, wooden houses of whimsical shapes are scattered among golden sand dunes, and a tall white hotel rises against the backdrop of sand – this is the famous “Desert Star” hotel known throughout China. Tourists here enjoy not only comfortable living conditions but also unforgettable impressions from star-gazing while lying in bed.

“I was amazed by the countless number of stars in the sky! Never before had I seen such a bright Milky Way in the city. At night, lying in bed, I also saw a shooting star,” shared tourist Tsozo Mence.

“As the tourism industry in China moves to a new level of high-quality development and actively integrates with culture, sports, agriculture, and other sectors, even more innovative and interactive cultural tourism products will emerge, which will give travelers unique, vivid, and unforgettable impressions,” said Liu Nin, Deputy Director of the Culture and Tourism Administration of the Xixia District of Yinchuan City. -0-
