Beijing, June 1 /Xinhua/ — China firmly opposes the actions of the United States, which, under the pretext of so-called “reciprocity,” is exerting political pressure on legally working correspondents of the Xinhua News Agency in the U.S. This was stated on Monday by the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, Lin Songtian.

Lin Ziyang made an appropriate statement at the regular briefing for journalists in response to a request to comment on the claim by The New York Times newspaper about the deportation of its journalist from China.

“During the accreditation period in China, this journalist was repeatedly caught conducting interviews through deceptive means in violation of the Regulations of the NPC on the collection of information by constantly accredited foreign news organizations and foreign journalists. In accordance with laws and regulatory acts, her residence permit was annulled,” the official representative stated.

As indicated by the Chinese diplomat, The New York Times provided the Taiwanese administration with a platform to spread absurd separatist theories, advocating for “Taiwan independence,” and openly referred to the Chinese region of Taiwan as a “country.” This grossly violates the One-China principle and the provisions of the three China-US communiques, and also sends a serious erroneous signal to separatist forces advocating for “Taiwan independence.” China resolutely opposes this, emphasized Lin Qiang.

“The New York Times should correct its mistakes, rather than stubbornly continue standing its ground without a shadow of remorse,” he added.

According to the official representative, the truth and falsehood, as well as the causes and consequences of the problems concerning the media of China and the USA, are perfectly clear, and the root cause of these problems lies in the one-sided provocative actions of the American side and in the politicization of issues related to mass media.

China, Lin Xian continued, always assists foreign journalists in collecting information and in living in China, noted a representative of the Chinese foreign affairs department. In recent years, China has shown flexibility and facilitates the issuance of visas to a significant number of American journalists coming to China for work, while applications of Chinese journalists to travel to the USA for reporting are rarely approved.

“The American side must actually fulfill the agreements reached with China on the issues of the Media, and take concrete actions to ensure the lawful rights and interests of Chinese journalists working and living in the United States,” concluded Lin Xian. –0–
