Guangzhou, June 1 /Xinhua/ — The hospital ship of the People’s Liberation Army Navy of China (PLA Navy), named “Ark of the Silk Road,” departed on Sunday from the military port in the city of Zhanjiang (Guangdong Province, South China) towards the islands of the South China Sea and the southern coast of the country.

As part of the upcoming mission, medics of the floating hospital will provide medical consultations to military personnel and their families stationed on the island, conduct medical examinations, physiotherapy within the framework of traditional Chinese medicine, surgical treatment, and sanitary education activities.

The staff of the “Ark of the Silk Road” also organizes training in a suit in which sea rescue will be practiced, and will provide technical maintenance of the corresponding medical equipment.

“Silk Road Ark” was put into operation in 2024, becoming the second domestic hospital ship with a displacement of 10,000 tons, designed and built by China relying on its own capabilities.

Recently, at the end of April, a vessel completed its 234-day mission abroad. During this mission, Chinese military medics conducted 26,324 outpatient consultations and performed 2,724 surgical operations in Nauru, Fiji, Tonga, Jamaica, Barbados, and Papua New Guinea.
