Dushanbe, June 1 /Xinhua/ — Tajikistan and China are consistently expanding cooperation in the fields of ecology and water resources, implementing joint projects on the protection of water resources, glacier conservation, and the development of green energy. This was stated by Tajikistan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sirodzhiddin Muhriddin in an exclusive interview with Xinhua agency at the sidelines of the 4th International High-Level Conference on the International Decade for Action ‘Water for Sustainable Development’ 2018-2028.
According to him, the state visit of the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon to China in May of this year and the signing of the Joint Statement on deepening all-encompassing strategic cooperation and partnership reflect a qualitatively new stage of bilateral interaction.
“The document demonstrates a high level of political trust between Tajikistan and China, and it outlines priority tasks for the consistent strengthening of the entire framework of bilateral cooperation,” the minister noted.
Speaking about cooperation in the field of ecology and water resources, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan and the Academy of Sciences of China are jointly working on the project “Water and Science,” aimed at the conservation of glaciers and biodiversity, as well as the rational use of water resources.
In addition, the parties intend to implement joint projects for the supply of equipment, technologies, and standardization in the field of renewable energy sources, including photovoltaic power, wind energy, energy storage systems, and other areas of green energy.
According to him, the specialized agencies of the two countries also interact in the development of modern systems for monitoring and early warning of natural disasters, as well as a platform for analyzing large arrays of meteorological data using satellite technology.
Glacier protection will become a separate area of cooperation. The Chinese side will provide Tajikistan with technical assistance in monitoring glacier melting processes using modern remote sensing technologies.
“Cooperation between Tajikistan and China in the field of ecology and water resources continues to strengthen, opening new opportunities for joint research and projects,” emphasized S. Muzriddin.
The 4th High-Level International Conference on the International Decade of Action “Water for Sustainable Development” 2018-2028 was held in Dushanbe from May 25 to 28. More than 110 official delegations from around the world participated in it. As noted by the minister, the main signal that Tajikistan wanted to convey to the international community is that today water issues go far beyond the sectoral agenda. Water is the foundation of sustainable development and is closely linked to combating climate change, ensuring food and energy security, conserving ecosystems, and improving people’s quality of life.
“It is precisely for this reason that the resolution of water problems requires strengthening international cooperation, political will, and a transition from commitments to practical actions,” he stated.
Tajikistan, with an area of about 143 thousand sq. km, ranks eighth in the world in terms of water resource reserves. The main sources are glaciers. However, the accelerated melting due to global climate change creates serious risks for the future water supply of the region.
S. Musriddin emphasized that glaciers are the main source of freshwater for the entire Central Asian region and play an important role in ensuring water, energy, and food security. Tajikistan considers the issue of glacier preservation as one of the key priorities of its foreign policy and climate agenda.
According to him, Tajikistan attaches special importance to the development of international partnerships in the field of glacier monitoring, data exchange, and technologies, as well as to expanding access for developing countries to financial and technical resources. In addition, Tajikistan intends to further promote the formation of sustainable international mechanisms for financing climate and water initiatives, including support for the International Glacier Preservation Trust Fund.
The head of the MID emphasized that the issue of glacier melting has a global character and requires collective responsibility, long-term vision, and joint efforts of the entire international community.
“Only through the unification of efforts of the international community can a sustainable future for water resources and climate stability be ensured for the present and future generations,” said S. Musriddin. –0–
