Jakarta, May 31 /Xinhua/ — The Indonesian safari park “Taman Safari Indonesia” /TSI/, located in the city of Bogor, officially introduced to the public on Saturday the first giant panda cub born in the country, named Rio.

According to the TSI statement, the debut was followed by a comprehensive assessment conducted by TSI groups in biology and veterinary medicine in cooperation with experts from the Chinese center for protection and study of large pandas. Specialists confirmed that Rio achieved all the necessary physical and behavioral indicators.

The infant, born on November 27, 2025, weighing only 200 grams, by the 184th day of life has turned into a healthy male weighing 11 kg. “He can now walk independently, actively interact with his mother Hu Chun, and has begun to consume bamboo shoots as part of a carefully planned transition to a new diet under constant supervision of specialists,” the statement says.

To ensure its welfare, TSI organizes public appearances of Rio in a gradual, controlled mode in accordance with international animal welfare standards.

Rio is the only giant panda cub born outside China in the last three years. “His birth is a significant contribution to international cooperation in wildlife conservation and contributes to the further strengthening of Indonesia’s role in the global giant panda conservation network,” the TSI statement says.
