Beijing, May 30 /Xinhua/ — China and the European Union (EU) are discussing the creation of a mechanism for consultations on trade and investments and will conduct a corresponding dialogue. This was reported by the Ministry of Commerce of the PRC on Saturday.

“China supports uninterrupted communication channels with the EU,” said an official representative of the ministry in response to a question from the media about the meeting of the European Commission held on Friday, dedicated to the discussion of relations between the EU and China.

China and the EU are important economic and trade partners, whose relations are based on equality and mutual benefit, said an official representative, adding that China counts on the EU’s adherence to the rules of the World Trade Organization, support for free trade and fair competition, as well as decisive opposition to protectionism and unilateralism.

An official expressed hope that the EU, together with China, will work on implementing the consensus reached by the leaders of both sides, resolving disagreements and frictions through dialogue and consultations, and will also promote sustainable and healthy development of China-European trade and economic relations.

A representative of the department also added that if the European side insists on unilaterally implementing new trade instruments and introducing discriminatory restrictions, China will be forced to give a decisive response and take effective measures to protect its interests.
