Hefei, May 30 /Xinhua/ — Mayors and city representatives from around the world gathered this week in the East Chinese city of Huangshan to explore new ways of protecting cultural heritage and urban development.

The 2026 World Mayors’ Dialogue, held in the city of Huangshan / Anhui Province, Eastern China from May 28 to 31, gathered mayors and city representatives from 10 countries, including Germany and Nepal. Participants exchanged views on topics such as world heritage conservation, cultural continuity, and “green” development.

“We work together on the restoration of our buildings and cities. It is very important that we have this friendship,” said Alexander Badrow, the mayor of the German city of Stralsund, who has visited China multiple times.

He noted that Huanshan has achieved impressive results in the development of technologies, improving the quality of life, and protecting traditional culture, adding that cities can also use their unique strengths to establish more friendly exchanges in support of urban development in the future.

Huanshan became famous thanks to the Huanshan mountains, which are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites and are celebrated for their magnificent natural beauty. Here, there are also many well-preserved buildings in the Huizhou style, built during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, with roofs covered in black tiles, and white walls decorated with exquisite wood, stone, and brick carvings.

This week, the event participants visited mountains and these buildings, as well as familiarized themselves with local crafts related to intangible cultural heritage, achievements of the automotive industry, and concepts of “green” development.

The mayor of Huangshan City, He Yi, said that the goal of the event is to create an international platform for equal dialogue and practical cooperation, where participants will be able to jointly protect the common memory and ecological values of all humanity and contribute to the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

“We would like to take advantage of this event as an opportunity to build a bridge for mutual learning and exchange of experience, as well as to explore new ways for the sustainable development of cultural heritage sites,” he said.
