Kinshasa, May 29 /Xin Hua/ — The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has a “very complex character”: conflict, lack of security, population displacement, food shortages, and societal distrust complicate efforts to contain the spread of the disease. This was stated here on Thursday by the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Speaking to journalists at the airport upon arrival in the capital of the DRC, Kinshasa, T. A. Gebreyesus stated that he came to show the affected communities that “they are not alone” and that the WHO is ready to provide support in eliminating the consequences of the epidemic.

He reports that VOZ groups are already working on the ground in Buni, the capital of the eastern Ituri province, adding that they will go there on Friday to assess the situation.

According to the head of VOZ, conflict and lack of security are among the main factors complicating the implementation of response measures. He once again called for a ceasefire in the area affected by armed attacks.

Responding to the question about travel restrictions introduced by some countries concerning travelers from the DRC, T. A. Gebreyesus stated that “WHO does not recommend imposing travel bans” because this would only delay the spread of the virus by a few days.

“The best approach is to strengthen measures on the ground and provide support,” he said.

According to the situation report published Wednesday by the Ministry of Health of the DPRK, in connection with the ongoing spread of the disease in the eastern provinces of the country, more than 1,000 suspected cases of the disease and 238 lethal cases have been registered.

The current Ebola outbreak has become the 17th in the country. As a result of laboratory studies, the Bundibugyo strain was identified — a relatively rare variety of the Ebola virus.

On May 17, the WHO declared the Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern. Later, African centers for disease control and prevention declared this outbreak a public health emergency posing a threat to the security of the entire continent.
