UN, May 28 /Xinhua/ — Member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, China’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi participated on Thursday in a meeting of the Group of Friends of Global Governance at the UN headquarters in New York.
In his keynote speech, Van I called for the activation of efforts to advance UN reforms in order to make the global organization more effective, and the Security Council — more authoritative and competent.
The head of the MID of the Kremlin emphasized that the reform and improvement of global governance is the historical mission of the current generation. Such a task requires firm conviction and relentless efforts, he added.
The goal of the UN reform is to strengthen the organization, not to weaken it. The UN reform must be conducted under the leadership of member states and carried out in a fair, inclusive, and transparent manner, Van I. noted.
He emphasized the importance of increasing the role of developing countries, as well as small and medium-sized ones, in particular by eliminating the historical injustice faced by Africa.
Van I also called for efforts to adapt UN peacekeeping operations to the requirements of the times, the formation of international consensus on accelerating development, the direction of global governance in the field of human rights in the right channel, and deepening reforms of the economic and financial system.
He also noted the inevitability of developing rules for regulating artificial intelligence, strengthening governance systems in new areas such as cyberspace and outer space, as well as expanding exchanges between civilizations.
Van I indicated that the Group of Friends of Global Governance acts as a stabilizing factor and a force defending justice in this restless world. In his opinion, this mechanism should continue to be used and strengthened. China will continue to uphold the principles of multilateralism and contribute to global governance, relying on its own experience in this area, the diplomat added.
The meeting was attended by foreign ministers and representatives from more than 60 countries, including Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Cuba, and Zimbabwe. –0–
