The United Nations “deeply concerned about the escalation of hostilities in Lebanon” and especially today’s strikes by Israel on southern Beirut. This was reported by UN Secretary-General Stefan Dujarric, speaking Thursday at a briefing in New York.
According to UN data, Israeli Air Force struck intensive hits on targets within the area of responsibility of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), as well as in the area north of Litani and the Bekaa Valley. Reports are also coming in about ground raids by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) north of Litani.
“We again call on everyone to immediately cease fire and stop any further attacks. Civilians and civilian infrastructure must never become targets,” said the representative of the Secretary-General.
Calls for de-escalation
The UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Janine Hennis-Plasschaert, and the head of the UNIFIL mission, Dyodato Abanar, continue to maintain contacts with the parties, striving for immediate de-escalation and compliance with Security Council Resolution 1701.
From the Armed Forces of Ukraine Headquarters, it is reported that about 670 projectile and missile launches were recorded over the past day – this is the maximum figure since the ceasefire came into effect on April 17. The mission also observed intense ground and air activity of the CAHAL: movement of armored vehicles, large-scale engineering works, and new airstrikes throughout the operation zone.
Mass evacuations
Over the past 48 hours, the Israeli military command has issued new evacuation orders south of the Zohar River, affecting hundreds of thousands of residents. According to reports, collective accommodation centers for displaced persons in the cities of Tyre and Sidon are overcrowded and can no longer accept people.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) expressed serious concern that families are once again leaving their homes. “People are being forced to flee again, and this is happening under conditions that are unbearable for anyone,” OCHA stated.
