Minsk, May 28 /Xin Hua/ — Nuclear deterrence is a forced measure to ensure Belarus’ national security amid the increasing presence of NATO troops at the borders. This was stated by Belarus’ Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Sekreta on Thursday at a briefing for accredited diplomatic corps representatives in the country. Corresponding information was published by the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The meeting was dedicated to the legal and factual aspects of the recent joint training of the nuclear forces of Belarus and Russia, as well as the reaction it provoked.

In particular, the Deputy Head of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry stated that joint nuclear exercises with Russia fully comply with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, are analogous to NATO’s practice of “joint nuclear missions,” and have an exclusively defensive character. Information about the exercises has been open and publicly accessible from the very beginning.

“Against the backdrop that the total military expenditures of Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia already exceed the defense appropriations of Belarus by 25 times, and the NATO bloc is increasing its presence directly at the Belarusian border, nuclear deterrence remains a forced, commensurate, and most rational measure to ensure national security, allowing to avoid a ruinous arms race,” noted I. Sekreta.

At the same time, he confirmed Minsk’s openness to a professional military dialogue with all interested parties.
