Novosibirsk State University and Xi’an Pedagogical University, known for strong training in mathematics and engineering, have opened a joint institute. The corresponding application for the creation of the new educational institution was approved by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. The joint project received the name Novosibirsk Institute of Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence. The first student intake will take place already in the 2026-27 academic year.
The new institute will have three bachelor’s degree programs — applied mathematics and computer science, computer science and computational technology, mechatronics and robotics. Thus, NGU unites the educational opportunities and resources of three faculties — the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, the Faculty of Information Technologies, and the Institute of Intellectual Robotics. The planned enrollment for the 1st year in each program will be 120 people, with a total enrollment of 360 people. Overall, 1440 students will study at this institute across all four years.
Preparation at the new institute will be built according to the 3 + 1 scheme: students study in China for three years, and the fourth year — at NGU. During the first three years, at least 30% of the academic workload will be carried out by NGU teachers who will go to Xian Pedagogical University. Upon completion of the training, students who successfully meet the university requirements will receive diplomas from both the Chinese and Russian universities.
—For us, this is the third joint Chinese-Russian institute, and at the moment we are the only university in Russia that has three joint institutes and more than 20 joint educational programs, approved by the Ministry of Education of China and agreed upon with the Ministry of Education of Russia. The development of such projects allows us to increase the number of foreign students, as well as the university’s income from paid educational services and further direct it towards development., — commentedEvgeny Sagaidak, head of the education export department of NGU.
The director of the new joint institute isMikhail Lavrentiev, Dean of the Faculty of Information Technologies at NGU, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He noted that the fields of study were chosen deliberately: there is a strong scientific school in Akademgorodok and NGU in the areas of applied mathematics, system programming, and artificial intelligence.
—NGU offers a unique combination of fundamental training and applied knowledge, and our university is widely known in China for its high level of education in the fields of mathematics and IT. We have experience in teaching Chinese students in our educational programs, for example, in the master’s program “Artificial Intelligence and Data Science,” and the feedback is very positive. The new institute will allow us to significantly increase the number of Chinese students who will come to NGU and get acquainted with the infrastructure of Akademgorodok. Such fields as IT and artificial intelligence are rapidly developing in China. Therefore, for us, this is also an opportunity to exchange experience with Chinese colleagues.
Part of the academic disciplines will be taught by our staff. Chinese students, especially those who have mastered the three-course program better than others, will continue their studies at NGU and, after successfully defending their final qualifying work, will receive dual university diplomas., — said Mikhail Lavrentyev.
The first joint Chinese-Russian NGU institute with Heilongjiang University was established in 2011. It became one of 17 pilot institutes within the framework of the national education system reform. The institute implemented an innovative model of joint training of two universities. Over 15 years of its existence, the KRI institute has graduated more than 1600 students. In 2025, the Ministry of Education of China approved the second Chinese-Russian institute with Heilongjiang University. It will offer training in four bachelor’s degree programs — chemistry, biology, mathematics, and robotics. The pilot intake for the first course in the 2026-27 academic year will consist of 240 people. In 2025, an educational program in physics was launched jointly with Chuncin University, where 60 students are currently studying.
