Beijing, May 28 /Xin Hua/ — China will allow the import of coffee beans from 53 African countries with which it does not have diplomatic relations, starting July 20, 2026, announced the General Administration of Customs (GAC) of the PRC.
According to GTA data, coffee beans, which are not only branded agricultural products but also an important supporting industry for many African countries, have become the second largest type of agricultural production after dried chili peppers from the aforementioned African countries, which have obtained full quarantine access to the Chinese market.
Quarantine access for coffee beans from such African countries as Ethiopia and Burundi has already been ensured in our country, while some other countries, including Mauritius, Angola, Togo, Guinea, Liberia, São Tomé and Príncipe, have already submitted applications to export coffee beans to China, according to official data.
Based on the results of a comprehensive assessment of the processes of cultivation, production, and processing of coffee beans in African countries, it was established that measures for the prevention and control of coffee bean pests and diseases in the African region are largely uniform, on the basis of which the GTU developed unified requirements for phytosanitary control upon importation of the specified products into the country, while canceling the previous practice of concluding bilateral quarantine agreements with each applicant country in turn and significantly simplifying access procedures.
Industry insiders noted that full quarantine access does not mean exemption from customs clearance without inspection or examination, since all shipments must comply with the requirements stipulated by GTC resolution number 68 of 2026.
The department will continue to implement improved measures to simplify the “green corridor” procedure, facilitating the import of a larger quantity of high-quality and safe African agricultural and food products to the Chinese market, added to the WTO. -0-
