At the demonstration production base for the manufacture of embroidered panels of the Tujia and Miao nationalities, located in the Sianfeng district of the Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in Hubei Province, the work is bustling: multicolored threads flutter in the air, and shining needles swiftly fly into the hands of the embroiderers. The craftswomen embody the folk-aesthetic traditions of their villages, stitch by stitch creating embroidery on products.

The base addresses key problems of traditional embroidery of the Tujia and Miao ethnic groups: outdated design, overly bright color combinations, and inconsistency with modern aesthetic demands. At the same time, it adheres to the principle of “preserving the craftsmanship,” deeply studies the features of the “Tusu” culture (local tribal leaders), actively develops related products in the field of culture and creativity, and also modernizes traditional items, including embroidered insoles of the Tujia and Miao peoples, in order to make traditional crafts part of current fashion trends. More than 30 embroiderers work at the base. Here a system of standardized production has been implemented and all stages of the technological process are strictly controlled — from material cutting to the execution of embroidery stitches. Such an approach allows guaranteeing the quality of the products.

Today, thanks to the possibilities of integrated development of “intangible cultural heritage + agriculture + tourism,” embroidery products of the Tujia and Miao nationalities of Enshi-Tujia-Miao Autonomous Prefecture are sold beyond the mountainous region of Wuling. Thanks to new trade formats such as electronic trading platforms and live streams, the products are successfully sold throughout China and abroad. In addition, there are workshops of master craftsmen, where systematic training of future bearers of intangible cultural heritage is conducted. This contributes to the employment of the local population nearby the house and to the living, active transmission of traditions through the standardized development of the industry.
