UN, May 26 /Xinhua/ — Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday called on the international community to abandon any unilateral actions adopted in the UN Security Council.
Answering journalists’ question about China’s proposal to assist the Security Council in more effectively carrying out its mission, Wang Yi stated that the UN Security Council remains the core of the international collective security mechanism and has carried the main responsibility for maintaining international peace and security for more than 80 years.
“At the same time, it must be acknowledged that in recent years the Security Council has sometimes been inactive regarding a number of key problematic issues. Therefore, in order to strengthen the role of the UN, it is necessary above all to strengthen the role of the Security Council,” Van I told journalists after a high-level UN Security Council meeting he chaired. The topic of the meeting was “Defending the goals and principles of the UN Charter and strengthening the international system, in which the UN occupies a central place.”
According to him, in order to achieve this goal, all UN Security Council members must consider maintaining peace as their mission, abide by the UN Charter, uphold justice, and refrain from actions driven by their own interests or that provoke bloc confrontation.
Van I also emphasized the importance of strengthening the role of developing countries, as well as small and medium-sized states through reforms, in particular by eliminating historical injustice towards Africa.
The international community must jointly reject any unilateral actions condemning the UN Security Council, so that unilateral pressure does not gain support and legitimacy, summarized Van I. –0–
